about

Bachir Attar, leader of the ecstatic and legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka and composer-multiinstrumentalist Elliott Sharp first met in NYC in 1987 through photographer Cherie Nutting. After playing duo gigs in 1988 at CBGB's and the Knitting Factory, the two decided to record with the idea of creating a mythical locus midway between Jajouka, Bachir's village in the Atlas mountains of Morocco, and New York's East Village, then a hotbed of artistic activity. Bachir had taught the Jajouka rhythms to E# who translated them to drum machines. Over these grooves, the two layered instruments with Bachir playing the double-reed rhaita, lira (an end-blown wooden flute), and the guimbri, a lute with a goatskin soundboard as well as singing on one track. E# played electric guitars, basses and drum machine as well as the slab, his invented percussive horizontal bass. Jane Tomkiewicz added the frame-drum bendir on selected tracks. This album, titled "In New York", was released in 1989. After the release, Bachir joined Sharp's electric band Carbon for tours in Europe in 1990 and 1991. With Jajouka New York , we finally see the reissue of the long out-of-print album plus live bonus tracks of Bachir plus Carbon, mastered from a board tape from the Rive-de-Gier Festival in Montpelier, France, January 1991.
